Stauning sits on the West Coast of Denmark facing the North Sea. It’s a quiet farm community of rolling hills dotted with seated moors. But if you sailed a boat directly west from there, you would sail right into the Firth of Forth with Edinburgh on your left. When it comes to climate, Staining actually has more in common with the Highlands of Scotland that Copenhagen.
And it was here when in 2005 nine friends set up shop to learn the craft of making Whisky. They wanted to push the boundaries of Whisky by reviving traditional methods with 24 copper pot stills in an old abandoned butchery, surrounded by rolling hills of grain. They even malt their own local grain. Welcome to the world of complex and deep flavors of Staining Danish Whisky.
The word “Kaos” in Danish means exactly what you think it does — “chaos”. Thorvald Stauning once said “Stauning or Chaos” and went on to win re-election as Prime Minister in 1935. But Stauning Kaos Danish Whisky is the opposite of chaos. It’s a carefully thought-out blend of their three core Whiskies — Single Malt, peated Single Malt, and malted Rye.
